Veteran audience members of the Friends of Music series know that for many years our August date would feature the perennial favorites the Bombastiq Brass Quintet, organized by Karl Kramer-Johansen, also of Blue Sky Trio fame. Having presented so many string-based groups this season we wanted to shake things up a bit by including a wind-based group and the association with Karl naturally made us think of the Dorian Wind Quintet. An added bonus is the presence of pianist Michael Cannon in an encore of the Martinu sextet the ensemble performed in July 2014 at the nearby Honest Brook Music Festival.

This will be the first performance in Stamford by the highly-acclaimed Quintet, and we are grateful for the multiple sources of funding that allowed Friends of Music and our audience members the privilege of hearing them here.

The Dorian Wind Quintet is renowned in the classical music world both as a group, first formed in 1961 at Tanglewood, and as individual artists who are each dedicated and busy chamber musicians. Members have changed over the years but throughout its history the Quintet has toured worldwide and has collaborated with many well-known artists, dedicated themselves to teaching at music schools and festivals, recorded on several music labels, and has commissioned works by contemporary composers.

Click here or on the photos above to learn more about these amazing musicians or visit their Web site at to read about them and to hear samples of the Quintet’s work.

Michael Cannon is likely familiar to all classical music fans in the Catskills region. A native of California who earned his graduate degree at the Juilliard School and who has performed worldwide, he happens to be an area resident and is the co-founder and Artistic Director of the aforementioned Honest Brook Music Festival in Delhi, NY. Mr. Cannon has performed previously for Friends of Music and we are honored to have his participation in this concert as well.
