DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 16\, at 3PM\, Friends of Music of Stamford NY presents a jazz concert by the Juilliard Jazz Ensemble\, performing as the Tyler Henderson Trio. This current lineup of the Juilliard Jazz Ensemble features three of the most talented young jazz musicians in the world: Oneonta native Tyler Henderson (piano)\, Peter Glynn (drums); and Nico Martinez (bass). The trio keeps the spirit of swing alive\, playing popular classics with fresh twists. This concert is hosted by the First Presbyterian Church at 96 Main Street\, Stamford\, NY. Admission is by donation at the door; the suggested donation is $12 per person\, $6 for seniors & students. There is no charge for those under age 13. Cash or check only; no reservations or advance sales. \n\n\n\nManhattan’s Juilliard School is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading music schools. Juilliard Jazz\, under the leadership of director Wynton Marsalis\, offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as artist diplomas. The department’s programming reflects the jazz continuum and its American vernacular roots\, as well as the social and cultural vitality of the music. Juilliard Jazz ensembles play more than 50 on- and off-campus performances annually\, including international tours\, as well as performances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Blue Note in New York City\, \n\n\n\nA native of Oneonta\, New York\, Tyler Henderson began playing piano at age 5. At first\, he learned music by ear\, not starting with classical piano lessons as most pianists do; he then took up saxophone\, guitar\, and french horn upon entering middle school. He was inspired to play piano seriously upon hearing the work of famous pianists Bill Evans and Vince Guaraldi\, and worked hard to develop his skills while participating in his school’s jazz band. Tyler moved with his family to Houston\, Texas upon his acceptance into the prestigious High School For Performing and Visual Arts. In Houston\, Tyler had the pleasure of playing with Wynton Marsalis\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, Sean Jones\, and Don Braden. He was encouraged by masters such as Barry Harris\, Javon Jackson\, and Robert Glasper through his participation in programs such as YoungArts and the Thelonious Monk Institute All-Star Tour. After being accepted into the Juilliard School in 2019\, Tyler moved to New York City to attend school and be a part of the New York jazz scene. Now entering his senior year at Juilliard\, Henderson collaborates with many musicians at New York venues such as Smalls\, Dizzy’s\, the Django\, and more. He is passionate about the history of jazz and hopes one day to become an educator along with his performance career. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNico Martinez enjoys performing a wide variety of styles on the upright and electric basses\, as well as composing for small ensembles. His talents have allowed him the privilege of playing at esteemed venues such as The Monterey Jazz Festival\, Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center\, Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society\, 55 Bar\, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts\, The Blue Note NYC\, and others. Starting in high school in Sacramento\, CA\, Nico began to take music very seriously and was playing paid jazz gigs within a year. These experiences led to his decision to pursue further education through the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University\, The Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet\, and The Juilliard School. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHailing from Maplewood NJ\, Peter Glynn has played drums since a very young age. He studied with his first mentor\, drummer and composer Don Peretz\, for several years before arriving at Juilliard\, where he went on to study with renowned jazz musicians such as Kenny Washington\, Billy Drummond\, and Donald Vega\, among others. Peter played at dozens of jazz festivals and venues in the U.S.\, Canada\, Japan\, and Switzerland. The Washington Post has praised his “articulate and flowing pianism” while the New York Times called him “a pianist who makes silences sound like music.” About a recent Glenn Gould tribute (with the Minguet String Quartet)\, the Calgary Herald reported\, “(Klein brings) to his performance a mature understanding…as well as a brilliant execution”\, while Classical Voice of North Carolina (CVNC) was even more blunt: “Andreas Klein is a stupendous pianist…a stunning performance by any standard\, and it brought the audience to its feet in a rousing ovation.” \n\n\n\nHe has performed in many of the leading houses of Europe\, from Wigmore Hall in London to the Berlin Philharmonie\, as well as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington DC\, and is at home with the grandeur of playing with the Berlin Philharmonic or the vast reaches of the Ravinia Festival (where he received two standing ovations) as he is with the intimacy of Le Poisson Rouge (NYC). He has extensively toured North America\, with ensembles including the Salzburg Chamber Soloists (a 20-city tour) and the Festival Strings of Lucerne (10 cities) and in South America\, where he performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in Peru\, Chile\, Argentina\, Colombia\, and Brazil. Some exotic places on his concert tours included Damascus and Yerevan. \n\n\n\nSince his meteoric start in his native Germany\, performing recitals and as soloist with orchestra\, he eventually answered the call to go to the Juilliard School in New York. But the highly focussed and musical approach to every work he performs was nurtured by one of his early teachers\, the great Claudio Arrau. It is a philosophy Klein is credited with continuing.

Eiko has athriving international career as a soloist as well as a chamber musician frequently collaborating with distinguished artists such as principal oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic Albrecht Meyer\, Eugene Drucker of the Emerson Quartet and Glenn Dicterow. \n\n\n\n She is a top prizewinner of international competitions such as the 4th International Competition of Tokyo among others. As a result of winning the prestigious Forval Scholarship\, Eiko was granted the Stradivarius “Reinville” violin. She serves as an assistant concertmaster in Albany Symphony Orchestra as well as regularly plays in the New York Philharmonic. Eiko is the concertmaster and senior artistic advisor of Pegasus: The Orchestra. Eiko has received BM and MM degrees from Manhattan School of Music and is a long-time resident of New York. In 2016\, she launched the critically acclaimed production titled “A Manhattan Story” with unique style of violin music with original storytelling. The first album “Winter” was released in 2017 followed by “Spring” in 2018: both being featured in the audio program on all international JAL flights. In 2018\, Eiko founded a new ensemble\, The New Yorkers\, featuring Karén Hakobyan as her duo partner. Since then they have been performing extensively in USA and touring Japan. As a recognition of her achievements\, Eiko was loaned the precious “Wilhelmj” Stradivarius violin by Nippon Music Foundation. Her rare and mesmerizing video production of Bach Chaconne filmed in the prestigious Kyoto temple Zenrin-ji (Eikando) was featured in the Strad digital magazine in 2020. Eiko Kano was recently appointed as the music ambassador of the OIST Foundation.   Sergey Antonov\, celloCellist Sergey Antonov enjoys a versatile career as a soloist and chamber musician. Critics throughout the world have hailed him as “destined for cello superstardom” -Washington Post\, “combining formidable technique and an incredibly warm\, penetrating and vibrant tone to a romantic musical sensibility to create music – making of a highest caliber” – Budapest Sun. After one of the Newport Festival concerts in RI\, a critic wrote “… a performance with soaring phrases and a tone to die for.” Sergey’s performance of the Elgar concerto drew the critic of the Moscow’s Daily Telegraph to write: “[he] is a musician who has his own inner space\, where he submerges himself from the very first sound…who turns each phrase\, every deeply felt sound into an event of his own inner monologue. The theme of this monologue is existential suffering; a change of intricately noted emotions\, directly related to the unexplainable conditionknown as Spiritual Life.” A Canadian critic wrote: “Antonov conveyed …a world of expression from plaintive hope to existential pathos.” One of the recent reviewers wrote\,  “ No virtuosic challenge is more than his equal. ”After winning the Gold Medal in the 2007 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow\, Russia\, Sergey has been touring extensively throughout Europe\, Asia\, North and South America performing in halls ranging from the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory to Suntory Hall in Tokyo. He hascollaborated with musicians such as Denis Matsuev\, Bernadene Blaha\, Kevin Fitz Gerald\, Ekaterina Mechetina\, Harve A’ Kaoua\, Carl Ponten\, Dora Schwartzberg\, John Lenehan\, Colin Carr\, Cynthia Phelps\, Martin Chalifour David Chan\, among others\, as well as his permanent piano partner Ilya Kazantsev. The duo has recorded several CDs of traditional cello-piano repertoire as well as their own transcriptions\, recorded in their CD album Elegy. Sergey is a member of the acclaimed Hermitage Piano Trio with Ilya Kazantsev and violinist Misha Keylin. In addition to being the 2007 Tchaikovsky gold medal winner for cello\, Antonov has been a recipient of the 2008 Golden Talent Award by the Russian Performing Arts Foundation as well as garnering top prizes at the Justuz Friedrich Dotzhauer Competition\, Germany\, David Popper International Cello Competition\, Hungary\, American String Teachers Association in Detroit. His chamber ensemble performances have also brought him honors from the Lyrica Chamber Music Series as their “Young Artist of the Year”\, and First Prizes from the Chamber Music Foundation of New England and the Swedish International Duo Competition. Antonov collaborated with such maestros as Vladimir Spivakov\, Dmitry Sitkovetsky Yan Pascal Tortilier\, Mikhail Pletnev\, Maxim Vengerov\, Oue Eiji\, Yuri Simonov\, Christopher Zimmerman\, Uri Bashmet\,  Jonathan McPhee\, Yuri Botnari\, Alexey Shabalin\, among many others. He has made his conducting debut in the spring of 2014. Sergey frequently gives master classes to solo cellists and chamber music groups in colleges and universities throughout the world. Born into a family of cellists\, Sergey started playing cello at the age of five with his mother\, Maria Zhuravleva\, as his teacher. She has recently become the recipient of the National 2014 Teacher of the Year Award of Russia. He has studied at the Central Music School and has graduated from the Moscow Conservatory where studied under the renowned professor Natalia Shakhovskaya. He holds an Artist Diploma from Longy School of Music in Boston where he worked with Grammy nominated cellist Terry King. While being a student at the Moscow Conservatory\, Sergey was under the tutelage of M. Rostropovich. Sergey has appeared on Russian National Television in performances with the Moscow Philharmonic in their “Stars of the 21st Century” series\, and in live concerts on Boston’s NPR radio station WGBH. His performances were also broadcast by NHK Japan.  ​Karén Hakobyan\, pianoDescribed as “a musician of abundant gifts and bountiful ideas” by New York Concert Review\, and “an immensely talented and dynamic performer” by Deseret Morning News\, Armenian American pianist\, composer\, and conductor Karén Hakobyan is a versatile force on the international music scene. Since his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of seventeen\, he has performed inmajor concert halls in Armenia\, Argentina\, Mexico\, Germany\, UK\, Belgium\, France\, Japan\, and the US. Karén regularly appears in prestigious festivals and concert series. Flanking Gabriella’s brightly colored quartet\, are two Viennese mainstays\, both written in the musical language of the High Classical style but with very different intents. Haydn bumbles around\, playing pranks here and there in his Op. 50 No. 5 and happening upon passing moments of bliss. On the surface\, Beethoven’s “Harp” quartet seems to follow much in the same clear-browed style of most balmy quartets of this time\, but it belies the coming tempest and profundity of the two middle movements\, and sweet off-kilter resolution of its graceful finale.” \n\n\n\nAbout the Music:Currently serving as Composer-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra and included in the Washington Post’s list of the most significant women composers in history in 2017\, identity has always been at the center of composer/pianist Gabriela Lena Frank‘s music. Born in Berkeley\, California to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent\, Gabriela exploresher multicultural heritage through her compositions. Inspired by the works of Bela Bartók and Alberto Ginastera\, she has traveled extensively throughout South America in creative exploration. Of the string quartet that the Telegraph will perform she writes\, “Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout draws inspiration from the idea of mestizaje\, as envisioned by Peruvian writer José María Arguedas\, where cultures cancoexist without the subjugation of one by the other. As such\, this piece mixes elements from the western classical and Andean folk music traditions.” The strings invoke the colors and playing styles of traditional Andean instruments\, including the panpipe\, tarka\, guitar-like charango\, and the quena flute. \n\n\n\nBeethoven’s String Quartet No. 10 in Eb Major\, Op. 74\, “Harp” is a highly expressive work. The quartet’s instrumental nickname is derived from the poised pizzicato heard in the first of the four movements. From there\, the music gives rise to a range of moods that Beethoven conveys through a blending of compositional forms\, decisive shifts in dynamics\, and his delicate guidance of each movement’s overallemotional direction. \n\n\n\nHaydn’s String Quartet in F-major\, Opus 50\, No. 5 presents defined shifts in tonality and form –– a quality that distinguishes the music from its predecessor\, String Quartet in F-Sharp minor Op. 50 No. 4. Motifs are introduced and established before the music moves on\, steadily developing new ideas among the parts in a clearer and more linear fashion. Themes are revisited through recapitulation but the connections and evolutions between existing musical ideas and subsequent expansions thereof in the music\, are easier to appreciate in this piece. \n\n\n\nMore about the Telegraph Quartet: Described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “…an incredibly valuable addition to the cultural landscape” and “powerfully adept… with a combination of brilliance and subtlety\,” the Telegraph Quartet was awarded the prestigious 2016 Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Grand Prize at the 2014 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. The Quartet has performed in concert halls\, music festivals\, and academic institutions across the United States and abroad\, including New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center\, San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre\, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Chamber Masters Series\, and at festivals including the Chautauqua Institute\, Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival\, and the Emilia Romagna Festival. The Quartet is currently on the chamber music faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as the Quartet-in-Residence. Notable collaborations include projects with pianists Leon Fleisher and Simone Dinnerstein; cellists Norman Fischer and Bonnie Hampton; violinist Ian Swensen; composer-vocalist Theo Bleckmann; and the Henschel Quartett. A fervent champion of 20th- and 21st-century repertoire\, the Telegraph Quartet has premiered works by John Harbison\, Robert Sirota\, and Richard Festinger. In 2018 the Quartet released its debut album\, Into the Light\, featuring works by Anton Webern\, Benjamin Britten\, and Leon Kirchner on the Centaur label. Committed to performing on saxophones that fit the acoustical specifications of its inventor Adolphe Sax\, the Zēlos Quartet looks to connect with a variety of audiences to show the wide range of sounds and colors of the saxophone.​Zēlos has been heard across the United States in live concerts such as 405 Shrader (San Francisco\, CA)\, Bainbridge Museum of Art(WA)\, Bridge Street Theather(NY)\, Beethoven Center (San Jose\, CA)\, and the Herbst Theather (San Francisco\, CA). They have also participated in summer music festivals such as Festival South (Hattiesburg\, MS)\, the Mana Saxophone Institute(San Jose\, CA)\, and the National Music Festival (Chestertown\, MD)\, where they haveenjoyed performing for local audiences not only in the concert hall but equally comfortable in farmers markets and public spaces alike. Committed to collaborating with artists of all genres\, Mei has performed alongside Claire Chase and the International Contemporary Ensemble\, Grammy-Award-winning ensemble\, eighth blackbird\, and visual artist Anela Oh. Mei received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School in New York City under the instruction of Mr. Jeffrey Khaner\, principal flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Currently\, she is pursuing a master’s degree in historical performance on baroque flute at Juilliard and serves as artistic director of the Sound Garden Quintet\, whose Seed Sowing Project challenges and redefines the conventions of classical music and brings them to communities across the United States. Outside of music\, Mei still loves watching animated movies (her favorite is How to Train Your Dragon)\, and she also enjoys solo traveling\, trying new foods\, and running marathons. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClarinetist Jin Yingcun Jin has performed and gained praise around the world. Jin was born and raised in an ancient city named Xi’an in China\, then moved to New York City at the age of 18. His musical expressions are mostly influenced by the cultures that he has experienced. Jin started to play piano at the age of 8 under the influence of his parents\, later began to learn clarinet when he was 11 years old. He has earned praises and awards along the way of learning clarinet. One of the most important appearances in the music world is joining the 2018 Kitakaruizawa Music Seminar in Japan\, where he met his mentor\, Charles Neidich. As a member of Juilliard Orchestra and New Juilliard Ensemble\, clarinetist Jin has performed in some most renowned venues in New York City and premiered contemporary pieces. Bassoonist\, Tristan Baban is completing his Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School\, where he studies with Judith LeClair\, Principal Bassoon of the New York Philharmonic. Previously\, Tristan had studied with William Short\, Principal Bassoon of the Metropolitan Opera. During his six years\, he has performed all positions in the Juilliard Orchestra\, Opera Orchestra\, Chamber Orchestra\, Wind Orchestra\, and Lab Orchestra.  Notably\, Tristan was the Principal Bassoonist for the Juilliard Orchestra at its Bernstein Centennial Concert at Carnegie Hall in 2018.  In recent summers\, Tristan attended the Texas Music Festival in Houston\, the Suoni Dal Golfo Music Festival in Lerici\, Italy\, and the Kent/Blossom Music Festival\, the summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra in Kent\, Ohio.  In high school\, he was Principal Bassoon for the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra in Fairfax\, Virginia. In 2015\, he won their Concerto Competition for Wind and Brass and performed Weber’s Bassoon Concerto with the orchestra. He was also Principal Bassoon for the Virginia All State Orchestra in 2015 and 2016. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt Juilliard\, Tristan has participated in the Gluck Community Service Fellowship Program\, where he and other students perform for patients at healthcare facilities in New York City. He also participated in the Morse Teaching Artist Program\, where he provides intense music instruction to 4th and 5th graders at an elementary school in New York City.  Born in Fairfax\, Virginia\, Tristan began violin lessons at age 4 and bassoon lessons at age 11. He continued to study both instruments until his senior year in high school\, when he chose the bassoon for his life’s work. Dedicated to community engagement\, Tristan plays the violin and bassoon at recitals for churches\, charities\, retirement homes\, rehabilitation centers\, hospitals\, and other nonprofitinstitutions.

Notable recent festival engagements included performances at Caramoor and Music@Menlo’s “Carte Blanche” recital series with pianist Orion Weiss. In 2018\, Ms. Um made her New York recital debut at Lincoln Center presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.  \n\n\n\nAfter winning the 2014 Music Academy of the West Competition\, Ms. Um made her concerto debut in the Walton Violin Concerto with the Festival Orchestra\, conducted by Joshua Weilerstein. Past concerto engagements include appearances with the Israel Symphony\, Auckland Philharmonic\, Vermont Symphony\, and the Dartmouth Symphony. She also recently appeared in recital and in chamber music performances in such venues as the Kennedy Center\, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center\, Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, the Harris Theatre in Chicago\, Wigmore Hall in London\, and at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. \n\n\n\nAn avid chamber musician\, Ms. Um is an artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS).  Festival appearances have included those at Marlboro\, Ravinia\, Yellow Barn\, Moab\, Seattle\, Caramoor\, and North Shore. Ms. Um also recently made her critically acclaimed debut at the Moritzburg Festival in Dresden\, Germany. Her chamber music collaborators have included Anthony Marwood\, Vadim Gluzman\, Pamela Frank\, Cho-Liang Lin\, Paul Neubauer\, Frans Helmerson\, David Finckel\, David Shifrin\, Wu Han\, and Gilbert Kalish. \n\n\n\nBorn in 1990 in Seoul\, South Korea\, Ms. Um began violin lessons at the age of three. In the year 2000\, she moved to the United States to study at the Curtis Institute of Music\, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree. She also holds an Artist Diploma from Indiana University. Her teachers have included Shmuel Ashkenasi\, Joseph Silverstein\, Jaime Laredo\, and Hagai Shaham. \n\n\n\nMs. Um is a winner of Astral Artists’ National Auditions. She plays a 1683 “ex-Petschek” Nicolo Amati violin\, on loan from a private collection. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nApplauded by the Calgary Herald as “…talented\, sensitive…brilliant\,” JIJI is an adventurous artist known for her virtuosic performances that feature a diverse selection of music\, ranging from traditional and contemporary classical to free improvisation\, played on both acoustic and electric guitar. Through her impeccable musicianship\, compelling stage presence\, and constant premieres of new musical works\, JIJI’s intriguing programming solidifies her reputation as a 21st century guitarist. The current lineup of the Juilliard Jazz Ensemble features Dave Baron (bass)\, David Neves (trumpet)\, Adam Birnbaum (piano)\, and Jimmy Macbride (drums).   Manhattan’s Juilliard School is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading music schools. Juilliard Jazz\, under the leadership of director Wynton Marsalis\, offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as artist diplomas. The department’s programming reflects the jazz continuum and its American vernacular roots\, as well as the social and cultural vitality of the music. Juilliard Jazz ensembles play more than 50 on- and off-campus performances annually\, including international tours\, as well as performances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Blue Note in New York City. \n\nEveryone has a story to tell. Jazz bassist Dave Baron lets his instrument do the talking. He has demonstrated his skills supporting such jazz luminaries as Herbie Hancock\, Eric Reed\, Joe Lovano\, Peter Bernstein\, Joe Magnarelli\, Benny Green\, Jimmy Greene\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Walt Weiskopf\, Lew Tabackin\, Mary Stallings\, and many others. In 2009\, Baron was selected as one of fifteen semi-finalists from around the world for the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition. As part of the competition\, he performed at Baird Auditorium at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History with drummer Carl Allen and pianist Geoff Keezer. In 2011\, Baron won second place for the International Society of Bassists’ Scott LaFaro Jazz Competition.David holds a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies and Contemporary Mediafrom the Eastman School of Music and a master’s degree in Jazz Performance from the Juilliard School. \n\nAdam Birnbaum is emerging as one of the top young voices in jazz piano. Since receiving a graduate Artist’s Diploma in jazz studies from The Julliard School in 2003\, he has become a presence on the New York City scene as a leader and sideman\, performing in such venues as the Village Vanguard\, the Blue Note\, Birdland\, the Jazz Standard and Dizzy&#39;s Club Coca-Cola. He has also performed on many national and world stages\, including the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival\, the Kennedy Center\, the Montreal Jazz Festival\, The Spoleto Festival\, The Red Sea Jazz Festival\, The Rockport Chamber Festival\, NPR Jazz Christmas\, and the Capetown Jazz Festival.As a leader\, Birnbaum has released four albums under his name in Japan and the U.S. His first release\, Ballade Pour Adeline\, received a Gold Disk award from Swing Journal as one of the top albums of 2006. Adam has also performed or toured with established jazz artists such as Greg Osby\, Regina Carter\, Cecile McLorin Salvant and Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis.Born and raised in Boston\, Massachusetts\, Birnbaum studied at the NewEngland Conservatory of Music before moving to New York City in 2001\, one of two pianists selected to participate in the Julliard School’s inaugural jazz studies program. Adam Birnbaum is currently an Assistant Professor of Jazz at SUNY Purchase. He is also a Steinway Artist. \n\nAt 30 years old\, David Neves is one of the most active and exciting trumpet players in New York City’s music scene. A graduate of the Juilliard School\, Neves has performed with some of musics most accomplished and well-known musicians in the world\, including Wayne Shorter\, Dave Liebman\, Arturo O’Farrill\, Ellis Marsalis\, Randy Weston\, among many others. David’s talents have taken him all over the globe to venues such as the Tokyo Jazz Festival\, the Fandango Fronterizo Festival in Tijuana\, Mexico\, Abu Dhabi\, the Torino Jazz Festival\, the Newport Jazz Festival\, and the Panama Jazz Festival.In February 2014\, Neves independently released “Progress Report”\, his first full-length album as a leader and composer.  \n\nJimmy Macbride is a drummer/composer based in New York City. He has performed with a wide variety of artists including Terence Blanchard\, Kenny Barron\, Jimmy Greene\, and Adam Rogers.Jimmy is a graduate of The Juilliard School\, where he studied privately with Carl Allen\, Billy Drummond and Kenny Washington. Whether it be a transcendent Op 132 or an effervescent Op 18\, Ignaz was the guy for the job. But even before Beethoven ever put pen to paper on his first quartet\, he composed a set of three string trios\, the premiers of which were given by none other than that lifelong comrade and musical devotee\, Schuppanzhig. \n\n\n\nGreat composers often develop beautiful relationships with their favorite performers\, many times leading to great artistic collaborations. And Caroline Shaw’s relationship with the Attacca quartet\, affectionately called the Rothko Collective\, is certainly no different. Caroline’s interest in color\, as suggested by her ensemble name\, also reveals itself in the title of her piece Thousandth Orange. Here\, Shaw colors her music with a thousand shades of orange through her imaginative musical textures and emotional subtlety. \n\n\n\nLike Beethoven with Op 9 and Shaw with her Thousandth Orange\, Johannes Brahms was also around 30 years old when he wrote this g-minor piano quartet. And just as with the other pieces\, Brahms enlisted his close friend\, the virtuoso pianist Clara Schumann to deliver the premier. Already in his twenty fifth opus\, Brahms conveys his deep love for the rustic musical styles that pervaded the villages of his eastern countryside. A rich culture of roving bands inspired the finale; Brahms’ “Gypsy Rondo”. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Kaplan\, pianist\, has been called “excellent and adventurous” by The New York Times\, and praised by the Boston Globe for “grace and fire” at the keyboard. He has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras\, including the Britten Sinfonia and Das Sinfonie OrchesterBerlin. Known for diverse and creative recital programs\, he has appeared at the Ravinia Festival\, Washington’s National Gallery\, Strathmore\, and Bargemusic. Kaplan’s New Dances of the League of David\, mixing Schumann with 16 new works\, was cited in the “Best ClassicalMusic of 2015” by The New York Times. \n\n\n\nKaplan has collaborated with the Attacca\, Ariel\, Enso\, Hausman\, and Tesla String Quartets\, and is a core member of Decoda\, the Affiliate Ensemble of Carnegie Hall. He has appeared at the Bard\, Seattle Chamber Music\, Mostly Mozart\, and Chamber Music Northwest festivals\,and is an alumnus of Tanglewood\, Ravinia-Steans Institute\, and the Perlman Music Program.Passionate about teaching\, Kaplan was appointed Assistant Professor of Piano at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music in 2020. Michelle received her Doctor of Music Degree in 2013 from Indiana University.Since joining the Tesla Quartet in 2011\, she has won numerous prizes at international competitions\, including the Gold Medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition; Second Prize\, Haydn Prize and Special Award for Canadian Commission at the 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition in Canada; and Third Prize at the Wigmore Hall London International String Quartet Competition in 2012. \n\n\n\n\n\nEdwin Kaplan\, violaViolist of the award-winning Tesla Quartet and the newly formed Duo Kayo\, Edwin Kaplan continues to forge a versatile identity as a recitalist\, chamber musician\, and educator. He has performed on concert series across North America\, Europe\, and Asia\, including Wigmore Hall\,Lincoln Center\, and Tanglewood Music Center.Edwin is a Doctor of Musical Arts and received a Master of Music degree and an Artist Diploma from the Yale University School of Music.  \n\n\n\nHe is proud to serve his community as an advocate for music education. One of his most treasured projects is the Tesla Quartet’s annual call for scores\, for which he combs through hundreds of recently composed string quartets submitted by composers from all over the world. Through his work with the Tesla Quartet\, he performs outreach at community primary schools and high schools and has given masterclasses at universities across North America. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nJared Blajian\, cello\, has performed as soloist as well as a chamber and orchestral musician on some of the most prominent stages in the world including Carnegie Hall and Severance Hall in Cleveland. He is committed to engaging audiences\, communicating passion and joy\, and changing lives through music. Blajian has taught at the Pascale Music Institute in Pasadena\, CA\, in community engagement through the Cleveland Institute\, the Sitka Cello Seminar\, the Heifetz Institute\, andthe Perlman Music Program.  \n\n\n\nA dedicated chamber musician\, Jared has studied with members of the Cleveland\, Guarneri\, and Juilliard quartets along with members of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio. At the Cleveland Institute\, he was a member of the Intensive String Quartet Seminar\, run by members of the Cavani Quartet\, and the Advanced Piano Trio Program\, led by cellist Sharon Robinson. Captivating audiences and critics ranging from Carnegie Hall to school classrooms to radio and television broadcasts\, the quartet consistently performs to enthusiastic acclaim throughout the country. \n\n\n\nFormed in Ohio in 1998\, the Euclid Quartet takes its name from the famous Euclid Avenue in Cleveland\, home to a wealth of renowned artistic and cultural institutions. Subsequently\, he earned top honors at three international competitions – Bulgaria’s 1st International Music Competition “Coast of Hope” (First Prize\, 1996); The Netherlands’ Peter De Grote International Music Competition (Grand Prix\, 2002); New York City’s L.I.S.M.A. International Music Competition (First Prize\, 2004). In 2004\, he toured  as soloist with the St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra\, performing in St. Petersburg\, Moscow\, Warsaw and throughout Germany\, and was appointed to the dual position of principal cellist and soloist with the Bayreuth Youth Festival Orchestra\, under the baton of Peter Gulke. 2008 heard him as a featured participant in a gala Carnegie Hall concert celebrating Russia’s Independence Day\, a program that included the distinguished Russian singers Yelena Obratztsova and Vladimir Galouzine. \n\n\n\n\nAfter studying at the St. Petersburg Conservatory\, Adrian Daurov was awarded the Jerome L. While still in school\, he was appointed principal cellist of The Chamber Orchestra of New York\, a position he still holds. In addition to being an avid cellist\, this monarch maintained an excellent orchestra\, and his musicality attracted the attention of many first-rate composers. Haydn\, Mozart\, Boccherini and Beethoven are the names most associated with him\, yet this program highlights lesser-known composers from Friedrich Wilhelm II’s orbit whose contributions to the cello’s increasingly virtuosic role were great. Graziani was Friedrich’s first teacher\, and the legendary Duport brothers carried on in this role while pushing the instrument’s limits. C.F. Abel\, a gambist and cellist of note who worked intimately with Johann Christian Bach\, dedicated works to Friedrich Wilhelm II that bridged the gap between baroque and classical aesthetics. The road paved by these composers led the way to Beethoven’s encounter with Wilhelm Friedrich II and the Duport brothers in 1796\, which yielded new works that put the fortepiano and the cello on an even playing field for the first time. \nAbout the ArtistsThe Hunt-Berry Duo is comprised of two artists who have dedicated their careers not just to historical instruments\, but to the study of late 18th and early 19th century performance practices. Shirley Hunt\, hailed for her Bach playing by The Strad as “…stylish and accomplished\,” recently became the first woman\, the first American\, and the first person of color to complete a compendium recording of J.S. Bach’s Suites and Sonatas for cello and viola da gamba. Other professional highlights include performing in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in New York as part of the YPCA program at the APAP conference\, a concerto appearance with the Brevard Sinfonia\, a weeklong residency at the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Institute\, and concerts as part of the NextNOW Festival at University of Maryland and Festival Amadeus in Montana. \nTheir 2015 debut release Souls in the Mud begins with original works that conjure images of America\, including the fast-paced opening track “Travesty” and “The Trace” (inspired by bourbon whiskey). The third and title track\, “Souls in the Mud\,” is an American transformation of a 16th century motet featuring banjo\, mandolin and a bluegrass-influenced boot-stompin’ finale. To round out the EP\, Invoke accompanies a historic recording of a haunting traditional English ballad\, and finishes with two compositions by prolific American composer Danny Clay. \nInvoke’s second EP Furious Creek\, released in Fall 2018\, is their first record to include vocals. The title track explores the relationship between humanity and nature with an evocative chant bookending energetic instrumental interludes. A fast-paced tune\, “Dogs\,” spotlights the banjo with a finger-picking\, bluegrass-inspired undertow\, and Karl’s elegiac setting of the Walt Whitman\, “O Captain! My Captain!” features Nick’s recitation. The EP wouldn’t be complete without a fan favorite closing number\, Invoke’s arrangement of the Stephen Foster classic\, “Hard Times.” \nBesides performing original music\, Invoke believes in championing diverse American voices through new music. Invoke’s ongoing commissioning project\, entitled American Postcards\, asks composers to pick a time and place in American history and tell its story through Invoke’s unique artistry.

In 2017\, the quartet finished first in the American Prize and won second prize at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. They were winners of the Vietnam International Music Competition in 2019. The quartet is committed to sharing this passion by increasing access to and appreciation for classical music while enhancing audience engagement. To this end\, the quartet offers interactive programs and workshops for all ages that serve to demystify the traditional repertoire while introducing audiences to exciting new works. Yoonah is a winner of the 2016 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. The first solo clarinetist to win CAG in nearly 30 years\, this Korean-Canadian artist joins the ranks of prominent solo clarinetists discovered by CAG\, including David Shifrin\, Michael Collins\, and David Krakauer. \n\n\n\nRecent performance highlights include Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with the Maui Chamber Orchestra\, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in a new arrangement for solo clarinet and string orchestra by Texu Kim\, and the World Premiere of a new concerto by Eric Nathan for Violin and Clarinet\, with violinist Stefan Jackiw and the New York Classical Players. DESCRIPTION:Misha Dichter\, pianist\n\n\n\nNow in the sixth decade of a distinguished global career\, MISHA DICHTER remains one of America’s most popular artists\, extending a musical heritage from the Russian Romantic School\, as personified by Rosina Lhevinne\, his mentor at The Juilliard School\, and the German Classical style that was passed on to him by Aube Tzerko\, a pupil of Artur Schnabel. He also studied composition and analysis with Leonard Stein\, a disciple of Arnold Schoenberg.  \n\n\n\nBorn in Shanghai to parents who had fled Poland at the outbreak of World War II\, Misha Dichter and his family moved to Los Angeles when he was two; he began studying the piano at five. At the age of 20\, while enrolled at the famed Juilliard School in New York City\, he won the Silver Medal at the 1966 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow\, which helped launch an enviable concert career. Shortly thereafter\, on August 14\, 1966\, Mr. Dichter was the guest soloist in a Tanglewood performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Erich Leinsdorf and the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, a concert that was broadcast nationally on NBC and subsequently recorded for RCA. Two years later\, he made his New York Philharmonic debut under the baton of Leonard Bernstein\, collaborating on the same concerto. Appearances with the Berlin Philharmonic\, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw Orchestra\, the principal London orchestras and every major American orchestra soon followed.  \n\n\n\nA recognized champion of Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony #2\, Age of Anxiety\, Misha Dichter performed this great work with David Zinman and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the 2016 Ravinia Festival. Mr. Dichter has been seen frequently on national television and was the subject of an hour-long European television documentary.  \n\n\n\nMisha Dichter’s discography on the Philips\, RCA\, MusicMasters and Koch Classics labels are legendary\, iconic and musically omnivorous\, encompassing the major scores of Beethoven\, Brahms\, Chopin\, Gershwin\, Liszt\, Mussorgsky\, Schubert\, Schumann\, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. A noted exponent of Liszt’s piano works and a champion of the composer’s forward-looking contributions to the development of music\, Mr. Dichter was honored in 1988 with the “Grand Prix International du Disque Liszt\,” presented for his Philips recording of the master’s piano transcriptions. His first recording with Cipa Dichter is a three-CD set of Mozart’s complete piano works for four hands and is available on the Nimbus label. American Record Guide called the album “an unmitigated delight\,” and Music Web International named it a 2005 “Record of the Year.”  \n\n\n\nIn 2007\, Misha Dichter took a three-month hiatus from the concert stage to deal with the onset of Dupuytren’s Disease\, a contracting of one or more fingers. After totally successful surgery and physical therapy\, Mr. Dichter returned to public performance and became a supporter of\, and spokesperson for\, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
